This self-assessment investigates and analyzes all my work in ENGL 21007 this semester. This is a very meaningful course for me, because my writing is my weakest part, and everything I learned from this course has deepened my understanding of writing. This self-assessment also investigates some contents from my work to show what I have learned in this course. It also shows my current strengths and weaknesses.

First, I want to show some contents from my favorite work in rhetorical analysis. The reasons why I like this work because the research paper mentioned in this rhetorical analysis is the part that I am very interested in. My hometown is in China, and I understand the water resources issues mentioned in the article very well, because China is a country with a very large population, and people’s neglect of environmental protection has caused a lot of impacts. So I studied the research paper by reading and analyzed the authors’ research results in detail through 5 elements: 1. audience. 2. authors. 3. exigence. 4. conventions. 5. use of appeals. If I have more time for this assignment, I will study the research methods and data mentioned in the research paper more deeply and further analyze the problems of water resource utilization in China.

Then, I will show my less favorite work in technical description. the first reason why I do not like this work becasue I used the wrong citation format in many places in this work, which resulted in a lower score for the work, and I did not discover this in subsequent corrections. Such as: “In the same year, the firstLogitech mouse, the P4, was released. (Wikipedia, September 26 2023 “Logitech” )“. If I had more time, I think I would work on the citation format because it is a very important thing to keep in mind for the entire semester.

I summarized my strengths and weaknesses through research on the entire work of the semester. The strengths I have is I can quickly organize existing information and integrate it into sentences to express what I want to express. I can also quickly find out where the focus of the writing object is. My weakness is that there are often word order or typos in my work. This is due to the fact that I did not check the article carefully after I finished writing it. Moreover, I often use wrong citations with references, which leads to the overall failure of my works. During the writing process, I always hope that my article can show my understanding of the writing goal and express what I learned from it. But sometimes what I show will deviate from my topic.

Through writing this semester, I have learned a lot of knowledge to enrich my experience as a writer. Before taking this course, my articles were mainly about reflections. After taking this course, I learned There are many things, such as: how to write a recommendation letter in the correct format, how to analyze the strengths of the product through its details, and how to analyze the research data in the research paper. I didn’t know how to write an official essay before, but now I can write an official essay myself by mastering the correct page alignment, abilities and figures, citations with references, and make my articles more attractive and interesting through authoritative data. convince

Also, I would like to talk about the writing habits and process I used in my works this semester. I will follow a routine and maintain the pace of writing. I will also allocate writing time through the bibliography and mark each completed project. Make sure to set clear goals and plans during the writing process. The techniques I use in this course are: Go straight to the topic at the beginning to attract readers, such as at the beginning of rhetorical analysis “The reason I chose this article is that I recently watched some videos about the ecological environment on the Internet and learned that some important resources are decreasing day by day. This article illustrates one of the problems, water resource utilization, and the authors demonstrate the urgency of the problem through research and propose some solutions.” Use citations to support my idea. The passage from rhetorical analysis “A section of a paragraph from the text could explain what motivated this study, “Meanwhile, the industrial sector consumes a lot of water resources, the World Bank estimates that before 2050, the agricultural water consumption rate will drop to roughly 50%, but the industrial water consumption rate will increase steadily” (Tiangui Lv et al, 2023, p.4162). Without good solutions, scarce water resources can cause agricultural problems, leading to food crises or a host of other social problems.” But in this semester I did not use some of the writing skills I learned, such as analyzing mood through rhetorical techniques, not using counter argument for comparison, as well as language description, action description, psychological description, etc. Because in this section, the compositions in the class are more focused on engineering writing.

Next, I want to talk about my performance in this class. Most of the time in this class, I often discuss our assignments with my group members, and we will exchange our views on these assignments to help us make better decisions. Well write the essay. I will contact my instructor via email and check the comments my instructor left for me to improve my article. During this class, I did not visit the writing center because my course time is very tight.

As a conclusion, I am very happy to take this class because I have met more people and their opinions have been very helpful to me. Also, I have learned a lot of new writing skills in this class. Tips to help me write better articles. Through this course, I think I can rely on myself to write offical engineering writing, which will also be of great help to my future study and research.
