This article is about the research has found in water resources utilization by Tiangui Lv et al, (
2023) “Spatiotemporal Evolution of the Green Efficiency of Industrial Water Resources and Its
Influencing Factors in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River of China”. The reason I chose
this article is that I recently watched some videos about the ecological environment on the
Internet and learned that some important resources are decreasing day by day. This article
illustrates one of the problems, water resource utilization, and the authors demonstrate the
urgency of the problem through research and propose some solutions. This rhetorical analysis is
to summarize the content of the above-mentioned research paper and find out the 5 elements: 1.
audience, 2. authors, 3. exigence, 4. conventions, 5. use of appeals.
The audience of this article is scientists who want to study how to protect and utilize water
resources more effectively and politicians who launch relevant policies on China. Related
questions and evidence are raised from the introduction part of the article “China has only 7% of
the world’s water resources, but 20% of the world’s population, and only 2300 m3 of per capita
water resources, which further illustrate its water scarcity”(Tiangui Lv et al, 2023, p. 4162).
The authors propose their hypothesis “how efficiently using water resources and
scientifically and reasonably measuring the green efficiency of industry water resources
(GEIWR) are the foundations for achieving green development in the region.”( Tiangui Lv et al,
2023, p. 4162). From here we can see that China, as the world’s most populous country, has a
population of 20% of the world’s , it only accounts for 7% of the world’s water resources.
This article was jointly written by multiple authors. Their names and affiliations will be
introduced here: Tiangui Lv is affiliated with School of Public Finance & Public Administration
and Institute of Ecological Civilization, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. Can Geng
is affiliated with School of Public Finance & Public Administration, Jiangxi University of
Finance and Economics. Xinmin Zhang is affiliated with Institute of Ecological Civilization,
Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. Han Hu is affiliated with School of Public
Administration, Hunan University. Qiao Zhao is affiliated with School of Public Finance &
Public Administration, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics. It can be seen from the
affiliation issues of institutions and authors here that these authors should be research scholars
and government personnel. They analyze the impact of the ecological environment on the
economy by studying the ecological environment and financial conditions, and implement
specific policies to protect them through these studies. current environment.
A section of a paragraph from the text could explain what motivated this study, “Meanwhile,
the industrial sector consumes a lot of water resources, the World Bank estimates that before
2050, the agricultural water consumption rate will drop to roughly 50%, but the industrial water
consumption rate will increase steadily”( Tiangui Lv et al, 2023, p.4162 ). Without good
solutions, scarce water resources can cause agricultural problems, leading to food crises or a host
of other social problems. Therefore, studying the protection and utilization of water resources is
an urgent issue and in order to raise the green efficiency of industrial water resources, it is a
important problem of how to effectively utilize water resources.
The authors create a research space (CARS) by demonstrating a current problem and the
importance, necessity and relevance of their research and promote research on the problem by
displaying the content of their work, thereby setting the stage for some key issues. In this
research paper, the authors did not question the previous research results, but they used
innovative research methods to fill the knowledge gaps that were not addressed in previous
studies.Tiangui Lv et al. (2023) used the IMRaD structure to study the following eight
subsections to more effectively demonstrate the problem: Input-output indicators of GEIWR,
Index system of influencing factors, Descriptive statistics of variables, Changes of GEIWR in the
UAMRYR from 2006 to 2019, Average value of GEIWR in the UAMRYR from 2006 to 2019,
The spatial distribution of GEIWR in the UAMRYR, Global Moran’s I index of GEIWR in the
UAMRYR, LISA map of the GEIWR in the UAMRYR, Tobit regression of factors affecting
GEIWR in the UAMRYR.(2023).The academic calculations, data plots and distribution plots in
the Methods, Results and Discussion sections allow the audience to visually see the trends in the
data. At the end the authors discuss their research results, error margins and Policy Implications
to conclude their research.
Tiangui Lv et al. (2023) used logical organization to demonstrate logos and present their
research results. Separating the research into subsections better guided readers to understand
their research results, and allowed readers to intuitively understand what the article wanted to
express. The experimental process and each data are also carefully introduced and labeled. The
author determines the order through the correlation of the data, which proves the logic of the
paper and provides corresponding reasons to support the views. And in the article multiple data
charts visually display the authors’ research results. The authors add these data charts to make
their information visually attractive so that readers can understand their research results and the
seriousness of the problems behind them. In terms of pathos, they cited data: “China has only 7%
of the world’s water resources, but 20% of the world’s population, and only 2300 m3 of per
capita water resources, which further illustrate its water scarcity” (Tiangui Lv et al, 2023, p.
4162). This shows that China’s water resources reserves are in crisis. If this problem is not
solved, China will be severely hit. Ethos can find in the introduction part,”Water plays an
integral function in balancing the earth’s ecology and stabilizing human development .
According to the report, the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were officially
mentioned at the UN Sustainable Development Summit in 2015. Among them, SDG 6.4 and
SDG 12.2 both emphasize the importance of water resources and their efficient use.”( Tiangui Lv
et al, 2023, p. 5 4162 ) In this paragraph the authors use the report from the United Nations
Summit to support their idea, the importance of protecting water resources and improving
resource utilization efficiency.
By analyzing the research paper, I understand that China’s water resources are in crisis.
Through the data in the article, it can be found that, driven by modern society, pollution
generated by industry, agriculture, and cities has led to more and more fresh water being
inaccessible. being exploited, thus posing a huge threat to the ecological environment. I learned
how to use data tables to analyze and support my academic and professional writing and how to
use logical article order to make the data more relevant. Also, the data research and recording of
industrial water resources inGWR in this rhetorical analysis will help me study the construction
